Twilight Movie

You’re invited to a Halloween screening of Twilight on Saturday, October 31 at 1:00pm!

We will have a best costume contest, so costumes are encouraged but not required. Costumes do not have to be Twilight-related, but feel free to come as your favorite Cullen if you want to! We'll also have a trivia contest, crafts, prizes and snacks!

Signed permission forms are required to watch the movie for those under 13. Forms can be found on the library teen page and turned in the day of the movie.

HelpNow! Demonstration

Bleach Your Shirt!

Kaplan ACT and SAT Practice Tests

Are you ready for your ACT or SAT test? Instructors from Kaplan will provide proctored practice tests at the New Lenox Public Library, and return scores with analyzed results.

The ACT Prep Practice Test will take place on Tuesday, August 4, from 1:00pm-5:00pm.

The SAT Prep Practice Test will take place on Tuesday, August 12, from 1:00pm-5:00pm.

Book Trailer Competition

Have you seen any good books lately? The New Lenox Public Library is holding a Book Trailer Video Competition. We want your original videos promoting your favorite books in the style of a movie trailer.

Trailers of any length will be accepted, but videos should run between a minute and a half and three minutes long. Please keep them under five minutes. Individual and group submissions are welcomed.

Deadlines for submissions:

Round 1: August 1
Round 2: September 1
Round 3: October 1

At the end of each round, videos will be posted to YouTube and the library teen blog and voting will begin. Voting will be open for three weeks. A winner will be selected by popular vote at the end of each round as well a final winner at the conclusion of the competition.

You may participate in any or all rounds, but voting is cumulative so the more rounds you participate in, the better your chances of being the final winner!

Signed release forms are required for any individuals appearing in the videos. Forms are available in the library, or download and print your own and return to the Adult Services Desk.

If your video is already online, you may submit it by sending the link to Tori. If the file is on a disc or flash drive and you want to submit in person please call or e-mail me in advance.

Book Trailer Competition

Here's your chance to try out your skills in directing, acting and video editing! The New Lenox Public Library is looking for Teens who would like to participate in a competition to create video book trailers. This ongoing contest will conclude later in the year. Trailers will be posted here on the blog.

Speed Tournament

The Rooks and Books Young Adult Chess Club will sponsor a Speed Tournament on Saturday, May 16, 2008 from 10:30am-12:00pm in the first floor meeting rooms. Players should arrive no later than 10:30 to ensure participation.

In this style of chess, players are given less time to make their moves than under normal time controls. For this tournament, clocks will be set at 5 minutes per side. A player whose time runs out automatically loses. However, if the opponent doesn’t have enough material to checkmate, then it is a draw.

No registration is necessary! Just show up and play!

Breaking Dawn Chapter 3

Chapter 3 Big Day

Alice picks up Bella in the Porsche (she's finally driving it!) to get her ready for the wedding. The process of which Bella spends a significant part of the chapter trying not to think about. She doesn't even look at herself in the mirror. Somehow she makes it down the aisle with Charlie (and without tripping) where she and Edward say "I do." At the end of the chapter, we learn that Jacob missed the ceremony.

Questions:

This chapter stands on its own rather well, so I don't have many deep, thought-provoking questions to offer for it.

The wedding does take place very early in the book. What is the significance of that? Does Meyer have big plans of her own for the rest of the book and wants to tie up the wedding in the beginning?

Jacob is still missing from the book. When will he make his appearance?

Additional thoughts? Was the wedding everything you wanted? Anything missing (besides Jacob)?

Breaking Dawn Chapters 1-2

All right! Chapters 1 and 2 are open for discussion! Please be aware that there are definite spoilers for these chapters, hence the lj-cuts. There may also be spoilers in the comments from your fellow readers about future chapters in the book. So proceed with caution!

There are questions for discussion after each summary. You don't have to answer all of them or any of them. If you don't like the ones I've written, please bring up your own topics, but please try to keep them relevant to these chapters. Thank you!

Book 1 Bella

Chapter 1 Engaged

The chapter begins with Bella going out to refuel her new car, a Mercedes Guardian (or S-Guard), when she overhears from a couple of campers that the car is not only flame-resistant, but you could roll over it with a tank, has missile-proof glass and 4000 pounds of body armor. Bella catches us up on some of the things that happened between now and the end of Eclipse. We learn that Jacob is still "missing." Seth is now good friends with the Cullens, particularly Edward. Neither of which the others are happy about. Bella remembers the night she and Edward told Charlie they were getting married and Charlie and Renee's reaction to it. When she gets back from the gas station, Alice is there to do the final check on the fit of Charlie's suit and Bella's dress.

Questions:

Do you think Bella's Chevy "expired of natural causes" or did Edward help it along?

Why does Edward get such a "safe" car for Bella? Is he really just going overboard again? Or is the protection in case of any "non-vegetarian" vampires that she may stumble across (e.g. The Volturi).

What do you think the "after" car is? (Only answer if you haven't read that far yet!)

How do you feel about Edward's evident over-protectiveness?

Bella sometimes behaves much more mature than her age. How does this influence her agreement to marry Edward, while she is still very young, as part of their tangled compromise? Is she behaving maturely or immaturely?

To what degree is her aversion to marriage due to her mother's influence or to her fear of gossip? Is there another factor?

Chapter 2 Long Night

Bella and Edward talk about the wedding taking place the next day. They discuss whether they are really ready for this. Edward expresses his regrets about the human life she's leaving behind to be with him, particularly having children. Bella continues to think about the next day after Emmett and Jasper show up to haul Edward away for his "bachelor party." She is nervous about the Denali vampires and Quileutes at the wedding together as well as imminent ego-hit she's sure she's about to receive when she meets Tanya. She recollects the story that Carlisle told about the Denali sisters, in particular the mother they lost to the Volturi after she changed a small child into a vampire. She remembers the history he told her of the immortal children. At which point she falls asleep and dreams of the Volturi coming to kill an immortal child that she feels driven to protect even though she is still human.

Questions:

Has Bella really thought through everything she's giving up to be with Edward? It appeared from the end of Eclipse that she has, but is there significance to Stephenie Meyer revisiting this issue at this point?

Meyer fills us in on the background of the Denali's in much detail, more than is really necessary to make us (or Bella) sympathetic. Again, what is the significance?

Bella's dreams have been semi-prophetic throughout the series, with Meyer using them as foreshadowing. This hints to us that future chapters of the book will somehow involve the immortal children. Thoughts? Speculation?

Annual Individual Chess Tournament
